IRELAND were in buoyant mood last night after keeping alive their hopes of a first victory in the European Boys Team Golf Championship at Gut Murstatten, Austria.

They swept impressively into the top flight for the match play stages effectively the quarterfinals and today face Germany for a place in the last four.

For the second successive year, it was a splendid team performance. But if one player had to be singled out for his contribution so far this week, it must be 18 year old Killarney golfer Daniel Sugrue.

He has not put a foot wrong either day and carded two thoroughly impressive 68s. Everything has been going well for me and I've holed some good putts," said Sugrue.

Also for the second day running, Waterford's Lee Dalton and David Jones of Derry also beat the par of 72. It really was champagne stuff which again brought a smile to the face of non playing captain, Frank Gannon.

With five of the six cards counting, Ireland had a 354 total yesterday to add to their 347 of the previous day for a 701 aggregate to put them in second place in the top flight, just two strokes adrift of Sweden.
