Drogheda United v Bohemians
What is it?Bohemians are hoping to kill two birds with one stone this Friday, using the trip up to Drogheda for their league clash to also collect the Premier Division trophy from its home for the past year. Bohs are looking to secure the title with four league games still to play.
And will they do it?Probably. Bohemians' record since the end of July reads WWWWWWWWWWWWW. Not only are they easily the best soccer club in Ireland at the moment, but they're also the best team named Bohemians.
The other one, based in Prague - and which won the Czechoslovakia championship in 1983, the same year it reached the semi-finals of the Uefa Cup - were relegated to the Czech third division in 2005 (their centenary year) because of financial problems.
And despite climbing all the way back to the top-flight, the club were recently relegated again to the second tier.
So Bohemians are on a high?Absolutely. The oldest soccer club in the Republic of Ireland was founded in 1890, and secured a ground of their own in 1901. They put up an iron fence around the area, put in a few railway sleepers for spectators, called it Dalymount Park, and, well, it's pretty much remained the same since.
Those who have played at the famous ground over the years include Italy, Argentina, the USSR, England, Black Sabbath and Motörhead. (How come heavy metal bands were allowed into Dalymount, but a planned Destiny's Child concert a few years ago had to be moved because safety inspectors said the stadium was not safe enough?)
Considering Bohemians are also now abandoning ship, and are moving closer to the airport (presumably they must be reckoning on more European matches in the future), perhaps it's appropriate Bohs fans will surely be able to celebrate a 10th league title at Dalymount Park on Friday week, when Derry City come to town.
A big crowd are also expected to travel from Dublin on Friday for the game, which will be shown live on RTÉ 2.
