Big two strengthen their grip

WOMEN'S HOCKEY: When Hermes and Loreto lose the services of their five internationals after Christmas their Leinster League rivals will need to take full advantage because the top two - the only unbeaten sides in the competition - have already opened up a six-point lead at the halfway stage of the season.

Between them they have won the title for the past six years (Loreto only interrupting the Hermes supremacy in 2000) and their victories on Saturday over Pembroke Wanderers and Old Alexandra respectively, their closest challengers along with Corinthian, simply increased the likelihood that that domination will continue this season.

A deflected shot from Aoife Mitchell midway through the second half, one that looped over the head of Pembroke goalkeeper Mary Goode, was enough to give Hermes the points at Booterstown. Hermes goalkeeper Tara Browne was called upon to make one superb save but the champions, who were without the injured Jenny Burke, were worthy victors.

Loreto had their two Ireland players, Orla Ryan and Nikki Symmons, in action but fell behind to a Trish Conway goal from a corner on the stroke of half-time. Cathy McKean, though, levelled soon after the break, with Wendy Byrne securing the win 15 minutes from time - both Loreto goals came from short corners.

Alexandra were reduced to nine players in the closing stages after Leanne Ryan and Zanya Dahl received yellow cards.

Hermes and Loreto, then, finish the first half of the season unbeaten, both having won seven and drawn two of their nine games - Hermes lead the table on goal difference.
