GOLF:RORY McILROY does most of his talking with his clubs. Not yesterday. After an opening 70 – which featured a ragged finish culminating in a double-bogey six on the 18th, where he went from a fairway bunker into the pond in front of the green – the US Open champion got involved a bitter Twitter exchange with one-time tour player-turned-TV commentator Jay Townsend.

After Townsend criticised the Ulsterman’s course management on the social network site, McIlroy took part in an unpleasant game of Twitter tennis with the American, calling him a “failed golfer” and saying his opinion “means nothing”.

Townsend even suggested the golfer should consider taking on Tiger Woods’ former bagman Steve Williams.

“He’s been having a go at JP (Fitzgerald) every now and again since (the US Masters) and this was the first time I’ve responded,” McIlroy said later.

“It was the straw that broke the camel’s back . . . now, I’ve blocked him on Twitter so I won’t be reading anything more.”

British Open champion Darren Clarke, who once employed Fitzgerald on his bag, also defended the Dubliner. “JP is a great guy, he really is. JP’s one of the best caddies I’ve ever had on my bag.

“But, in saying that, I have respect for Jay as well as a commentator and what he does. They’re both entitled to their opinions.”

Bitter Twitter

Townsend: “McIlroy’s course management was shocking. Some of the worst course management I have ever seen beyond under-10 boys’ golf competition.”

McIlroy: “Shut up . . . you’re a commentator and a failed golfer, your opinion means nothing!”

Townsend: “(McIlroy) should hire Stevie Williams (sacked by Tiger Woods last week), as I thought JP (Fitzgerald) allowed some SHOCKING course management today.”

Townsend: “Sorry, but I stand by my comments.”

McIlroy: “Well, I stand by my caddie.”

Townsend: “As you should, I respect that.”
