JUNIOR squad manager Tony Allen has decided on the team to represent Ireland in the Junior Tour. Paul O'Callaghan of the Rapparee, Clonard club and Barry Twohig (Cork), who were first and second in the championship at Portglenone last Sunday week, were automatic choices and they will be accompanied by David O'Loughlin of Mayo Wheelers and John McCarthy (Listowel).
The Junior Tour, sponsored again by the League of Credit Unions and organised by Pat McQuaid, starts in Limerick on Sunday, August 4th and after stages to Tralee, Killorglin, Killarney, Bantry, Macroom, Kanturk and Dungarvan, it finishes in Cork on the 11th.
Although Twohig won all three of the junior league races held so far, he was outsprinted by O'Callaghan in the championship and the next event of the six in the league is the Tour of Midleton on Sunday (2.0). Twohig leads with 45 points to 25 for O'Callaghan, McCarthy is third with 18. Next are Micheal Fitzgerald on 13, O'Loughlin 12 and Aengus Ryan 11.
At senior level the Tour of Midleton is the sixth of eight events to count in their league and it is much tighter at the top with David McCann and Tommy Evans on 42 points each. McCann has gone for the Olympic road race on July 3 1st and the other races are the Tour of Armagh on Sunday week and the Moriarty Memorial at Listowel on August 4th.
David Peelo is third with 31 points, followed by Richie McCauley and Paul Griffin on 27 and 26 respectively. After that Stephen O'Sullivan is on 16 while Barry Monaghan has 12.
First category licence holders are excluded from the two day race at Tuam tomorrow and Sunday but all categories are catered for at Midleton where there is also the TSB criteriun tomorrow evening (6.0). Sunday's list also includes the Navan club's Ballivor Grand Prix.
In addition to Simon Coughlan setting a new distance of 43.527 kilometres for the one hour record at Manchester last Friday he also beat David Peelo's times for five, 10 and 20 kilometres and has submitted them for ratification. In addition Coughlan went for a time in the pursuit distance of 4,000 metres and he recorded four minutes 50.425 seconds.
