Sir, - Over the years Telecom Eireann has been inefficient, overstaffed and consistently the most expensive service of its nature in Europe. In consequence, need I say I was surprised to read the following in a Sunday paper:

"One hundred of the company's managers are expected to get £500,000 each in share options - on top of the £100,000 in free stock they have already been promised.

"Telecom's governance committee, comprised of senior managers and directors, is set to recommend that share options worth about 1 per cent of the company be given to high-ranking employees. If the company floats at about £5.5 billion, as expected, staff would share £55 million worth of rights. The options are expected to be allocated according to seniority."

Why should Irish taxpayers, who have carried this company since it was founded, now be deprived of the enormous sum mentioned therein due to Government inertia? Can nothing be done to stop this appalling robbery? - Yours, etc., Timothy Ryan, James O'Connor & Co.,
