BLUE-chip shares chalked up their third straight record high yesterday on a late rally buoyed by falling long-term rates

BLUE-chip shares chalked up their third straight record high yesterday on a late rally buoyed by falling long-term rates. The Dow Jones index of 30 leading industrials picked up 13.79 points to 6,219.83.

On the broader New York Stock Exchange some 405 million shares changed hands, with advancing shares outnumbering decliners 1,294 to 1,078 and 889 issues unchanged.

On the bond market the interest rate on the benchmark 30-year bond fell to 6.50 per cent

Traders were keeping an eye out for next Wednesday's meeting of the Federal Reserve's policy-making Open Market Committee.
