YOUNG VOTERS AND THE ELECTION

Sir, - The National Youth Council of Ireland is committed to encouraging and promoting the participation of young people in the electoral and democratic process. It is aware that many young people, particularly students, were very frustrated and disappointed that they could not vote in the recent referendum because it was held on a weekday, which did not facilitate students living away from home.

While it is still possible that the coming general election will be held at a weekend, it may also be held on a weekday. Therefore, I would be grateful if you could allow me to highlight the possibility for students to vote by postal ballot. Up until two days after the date of the election is announced, anyone whose work or education is likely to prevent them from voting at their local polling station can apply for a postal vote.

Those wishing to avail of this facility should contact their local city or county council and look for a PV2 form, which must be completed and returned to the city/county council before the closing date. For those who are not yet registered in their constituency, but would find it more convenient to vote there, a pink application form is available from the post office to be included on the supplementary register.

We are aware that some students have encountered difficulties in applying for a postal vote. If so, please contact NYCI at 01-4784122 or info@nyci.ie.

While the NYCI hopes the Government, if it is serious about promoting young people's participation in the electoral process, will hold the election on a Saturday, we would still encourage as many young people to apply for a postal vote or register in their area if they are away from home and studying full time to ensure their voice is heard at General Election time. - Yours, etc.,

President,
