Sir, What a pity that RTE has decided against covering this year's Women's Irish Golf Open. It goes without saying that coverage of women in any sport by RTE (and all other TV channels) is minimal, but it was heartening to see RTE going against this trend in the last two years by finally taking a pro active role towards coverage of women's golf.
Would there be so much interest in men's golf or indeed any other sport if we were not constantly bombarded with coverage and commentary on every aspect of these events. Similar blanket coverage of women's golf could have surprising results. RTE's head of sport, Tim O'Connor's comment that "We just do the event. We don't switch off because there are women in it" (Sunday Business Post, May 12th)," is an abdication of responsibility to grow and develop women's sport in general. It is to be hoped, that our national broadcasting station is not reduced to solely reacting to short term ratings.
Can we take comfort from the fact that there will be Formula One Grand Prix motor racing and the Leinster football final on instead? Oh well, there is always gardening. Yours, etc.,
