Here in the west of the city, the employment generated by the construction of a stadium, its weekly servicing and the provision of ancillary business would be viewed as a godsend in an area of high unemployment. In addition, of course, there would be the attraction of live premiership - and possibly also European - football with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Spurs etc. gracing the locality.

To those who say it can't be done, I say: what about Derry City from Northern Ireland playing in the FAI National League? What about Berwick Rangers from England playing in the Scottish League? What about Cardiff City, Swansea and Wrexham not only playing out of Wales in the English League but also getting two bites at European qualification by competing in both the Welsh FA and English FA Cups?

And, finally, the clincher: what about the Tour de France starting in Ireland? - Yours, etc.,
