Madam, - In her column of August 14th, Breda O'Brien writes that women "should have the freedom to work. . .without having to suffer unbearable stress as a consequence". Some of the remedy for that situation lies in their own hands.

Because women, who form a majority in the electorate, do not vote for women, very few TDs are women. As a result, according to the Commission for the Status of Women, women's issues, such as childcare and flexibility in working life, are "marginal to the main political agenda of the day".

The commission concluded that this is "unlikely to change until a critical mass of women representatives has been attained". So women should vote for women in elections.

This would ensure that the perspectives of the majority of voters are better represented when resources are allocated. - Yours, etc.,
