Sir, - As a mature student I read Christina Murphy's column (September 7th) with interest. I find it alarming to read about the number of empty course places in the RTCs and universities this year.
Now surely, an increase intake of mature students is possible? It must be pointed out there is a high dropout rate amongst first year students in university. It raises the question: does this apply to mature students?
It has to be remembered that there is an increasing number of adults going back to college through the VEC colleges. Now surely, the major academic bodies have a lot to answer for?
