A chara, - In a highly contradictory editorial (October 18th) on the legacy of Che Guevara, it is argued that free trade has "emerged as the preferred means of maintaining US hegemony" in Latin America.

This may well be the case in general terms, but in an editorial about Cuba, surely the 36-yearlong economic blockade of Cuba by the US needs to be mentioned! Not only would this highlight the deep contradiction in US foreign policy, but the immoral and illegal nature of the US blockade would also be exposed for what it is: the imposition of unfree trade. One real legacy of Che Guevara, 30 years after his death, is that the struggle in Cuba against US imperialism, to which he gave his life, is as necessary today as it was at the time of the Cuban revolution in 1959. In this regard, we urge the Irish Government to vote, as it did last year, against the US blockade when the resolution comes up at the United Nations in November. - Is mise, Douglas Hamilton, Chairperson,
