Sir, – Describing as “outrageous” a photograph carried in some of Northern Ireland’s newspapers of a man urinating against the gates of St Matthew’s Catholic church in east Belfast during the Ulster Covenant commemoration march, Rev Mervyn Gibson, the Grand chaplain of the Orange Order apologised in person to the parish priest of St Matthew’s church for this appalling behaviour (Home News, October 2nd).

Perhaps Drew Nelson, the Orange Order grand secretary, might be encouraged to follow the example set by Rev Gibson and engage in person with the residents of the parish of St Matthew in advance of any further Orange marches. – Yours, etc,

TOM COOPER,
