Sir, – Now that we have a few moments to discuss electoral matters without having an “agenda” involved, might it be time to begin a discussion of the value of using posters in the run-up to elections and referendums? Many people, including some political activists, see them as an anachronism in the days of email and social media. Has the time come to ban them?

It used to be said that posters and a few leaflets were often all that some Independent candidates could afford. That was cited as justification for not banning their use. But other countries don’t have a problem in this regard, and their lampposts and poles are free from posters at elections.

So, do we need them? Do the parties and candidates need them? Is it only the printing industry which benefits from them? – Yours, etc,
