Sir, - I don't necessarily carry a "torch" for your columnist, Nuala O'Faolain, because of some of the things she has written but I thought her article (April 29th) concerning the totality of the social role of the Catholic Church was both good and timely.
These days we hear all too little about the undoubted unchanging fundamentalism of Irish Catholicism, as outlined so well in her column.
This fundamentalism is evident in so many other ways today not withstanding having endured bruising and battering over centuries of heinous oppression. Today that oppression is still ongoing though much more subtle.
Suggestion: you should appoint a small independent group who would extract the best of the pieces by your columnists and then publish them in booklet form. It would make for pleasant "looking back" reading. - Yours, etc.,
