Sir, - Many of your readers will be familiar with the case of Uggool Beach in Co Mayo. The issue of its closure has featured many times in your columns. This peerless beach is located on the north shore and at the mouth of Killary Harbour. Access to the beach has not been possible since 1989, as it has been wired off since then. However, it is still a public beach, and those who have enjoyed it in the past now have a chance to do so once again.
Keep Ireland Open, in association with many others who have been concerned about this beach over the years, is holding a family outing day on Uggool beach on Sunday, June 28th, between 1.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. Low water is at 3 p.m., approximately, and this will facilitate access. The meeting place will be on the green area at the end of the public road from Louisburgh.
Mr Michael D. Higgins, TD, has taken a particular interest in the closure of Uggool Beach, and he has promised to attend along with his wife. There will also be a landing by canoeing enthusiasts, and Irish traditional music will entertain visitors on the day. For those who would like to renew acquaintance with lovely Uggool beach, this will be a day not to miss. - Yours, etc., Dr Thomas S. Rea,
Chairman Western Branch,
Keep Ireland Open,
Headford,
Co Galway.
