Sir, - This method of prawn fishing was sanctioned by BIM (Bord Iascaigh Mhara) a number of years ago. A trawler uses two nets; the nets drag a heavy chain along the seabed, causing great damage to the fish. This chain weighs well over five hundredweight.
Concerned fishermen are alarmed that if this form of fishing prawns is continued the fishing grounds will be decimated, as has happened to the grounds of other countries. I ask the Minister for the Marine, Mr Barrett, and BIM to look into the twin rigging method and to bring it to an end forthwith. -Yours, etc
