Sir, The Turin Shroud is not a Catholic relic, as your report (April 14th) on its rescue seems to imply. Its association with the Catholic Church is a historical accident. The Shroud is for everyone, or it is nothing.
The test carried out by the carbon dating method in 1988 declared it to be a 14th century artefact, apparently invalidating the mountain of evidence for its authenticity. Those who accept that verdict must also accept the possibility that a cow was munching buttercups in a meadow in the year 2005. Yours, etc.,
