Sir, - I was saddened to see over the last few days the felling of so many beech trees along the roadside at Loughlinstown. What are the planners thinking of, or what are they being motivated by in allowing this wanton destruction?

Why is it that the planners are being driven to remove trees that took so long to mature and where it is considered best to replace them by litter-swept, tarmacadam? Surely there must be legislation to protect our nature particularly in our cities. Why is it so unacceptable to try and incorporate the trees in the new developments - what is it with our planners and developers value systems that justifies the destruction of so much that is good? And for what - another foreign-owned shopping centre?

Congratulations to King Tree Felling Services for a sentence well executed. - Yours, etc.,
