Sir, - John Fitzpatrick (November 13th) does his argument no favours by bemoaning the plight of workers in the public service sector. He states that taxi-drivers, train-drivers and Aer Lingus workers provide a public service. One must assume he has never experienced the inconsistent and over-priced taxi fares charged, does not commute by train and rarely travels overseas on the national airline. None of these "services" is run with the customer in mind.

Furthermore, to state that anyone employed in an office job has automatically reaped the benefits of what was the Celtic Tiger is simply untrue.

I assume that when the Government produce statistics and figures to convince us that all is not doom and gloom Mr Fitzpatrick will greet them with some scepticism. He would do well to treat the misinformation we have been given regarding the private and public sector pay gap in the same manner.

Perhaps if unions and workers didn't have such high wage demands the Government's fiscal policy would not come under such criticism. - Yours, etc.,
