Sir, - There would be fewer cars on the road if those guilty of a second serious traffic offence were subject to a mandatory loss of driving licence for one year - serious offences to include speeding, faulty lights (and other faults rendering the vehicle unsafe), illegal parking and being over the drink limit.
If the traffic climate dictates that there must be fewer cars, it is the irresponsible who should be forced to give way. Not only would the roads be less congested for those of us prepared to drive responsibly, but also safer for drivers and pedestrians alike. - Yours, etc., Paul M. Byrne,
Belton Terrace, Bray, Co Wicklow.
