Sir, - When I wrote my letter of July 21st, which criticised no person, I felt I had a right to express an independent opinion on the over-reaction to traffic calming in Mount Merrion; it appears not to be so.

Mr John Murphy, writing on behalf of the Mount Merrion Residents Association, makes a personal attack on me which, for low standards, reaches a new nadir. He breaks committee confidentiality by publicly accusing me of not paying a "modest £6". Groucho Marx once said he would join no association that would have him as a member. If Mr Murphy is long enough in the association, he will well know why I left it.

Meanwhile, people do have a right to express opinions other than his, and indeed many have in response to my letter - so many in fact, that I wonder at the strength of his support. Or does that touch on a sore point? - Yours, etc.,

Dermot. C. Clarke, Wilson Road, Mount Merrion, Co Dublin.
