Traffic Calming

Sir, - It is not clear if Mr. John Murphy(July 18th), is writing on his own behalf or on that of the residents' association, certainly he does not represent my views nor that of the many residents who are appalled at what h as been done in this area.

The over-reaction to traffic problems, no worse in Mount Merrion than anywhere else, has to be seen to be believed. Entire roads have been reduced to the capacity of primal lanes. There are myriad roundabouts which along with right-angle piers, traffic lights, bumps, and alternate flow of traffic are like an army obstacle course. The standard of work is shoddy.

The erection of poles to support dozens of road signs must give the area the name "Porcupine Estate". Trying to manoeuvre a roundabout, which had just been finished, I almost tore the side off my car on a traffic sign which protruded onto the road. When I pointed this out, all the signs were removed within 30 minutes. Does anyone supervise what goes on or the standard of work?

It would take too much of your space to go into details of the sheer official vandalism in this area. Perhaps you might make a photographic display of what the county council considers an improvement. Along with the ghastly lamp standards and ever-increasing traffic-sign poles, we are really making a drab and ugly show of this entire country.
