Sir, – A campaign was launched this week by people with a vision impairment to express their frustration at the persistently poor quality of announcements on Irish trains (Home News, July 21st).

Over the past months and years, Irish Rail has come up with the excuse that the announcements don’t always work on the Dart because of a problem with the system on some of the carriages. Irish Rail has stated that it is aware of the problem and agrees it needs to be sorted out.

We have heard this excuse over and over again.

If Irish Rail has an interest to resolve the issue, why aren’t drivers advised to announce the stops for the time being? Whenever there is a power cut in Dún Laoghaire or the train is delayed for other reasons, the drivers make an announcement. So wouldn’t it be easy to announce the stops on Dart trains whenever the announcements are not working? – Yours, etc,
