Sir, – I read with sadness that the preserved heart of St Laurence O’Toole, the patron saint of Dublin, had been stolen from Christ Church Cathedral (Breaking News, March 3rd). How ironic that only now in its absence has it been elevated to the status of “priceless treasure”.

Bolted to a wall, chained and imprisoned within an ugly iron structure, it was more reminiscent of something caged than revered. One can only wonder if the thieves who removed the relic will be any less respectful than the Cathedral Chapter of its spiritual and historic significance to the city and her people. – Yours, etc,
