Sir, - A.J. Cotter's letter on hide-and-seek signposting (September 3rd) reminds me of a complaint from an English tourist when I worked in Bord Fβilte some years ago.
On a motoring holiday in west Cork, he had lost his way in a network of roads in a remote area. Given directions by a farmer, he spoke to him about the lack of signposting.
The farmer pondered for a moment, then replied: "What would we want signposts for? Sure the roads around here lead nowhere."
Not for the first time, an Englishman in Ireland retired baffled and bemused. - Yours, etc.
