Madam, - While George Redmond is a convicted bribe-taker, must he appear on the pages of your newspaper in handcuffs (The Irish Times, November 20th)? Can it have been expected that this broken old man of 79 would possibly make a run for it?

Madam, - George Redmond may be the first unelected official to be convicted in Ireland of corruption. But on March 13th, 1931, two Tipperary councillors were convicted of taking £20 for procuring a council cottage. Imposing on them six months in jail and a seven-year ban from public office, the judge remarked that "public figures should not abuse their trust". And no tribunals were needed. - Yours, etc.,
