Sir, - At the beginning of the presidential campaign Mary Banotti called on her rivals not to litter the countryside with posters, a request which has been ignored by Mary McAleese and Adi Roche.
On a recent trip from Mullingar to Athlone, every pole, billboard and available wall was covered with Mary McAleese posters urging the passing motorist to vote for her. Similarly, on a trip from Mullingar to Limerick the following day, during very heavy rainfall, Adi Roche posters were blowing all over the roads and hanging at all sorts of angles from poles and, above all horrors, from trees!
Surely the time has come for a total ban on this "in your face" method of gaining votes. I find the practice offensive and irritating and it has discouraged me from even considering voting for either of these two candidates. - Yours, etc., Albert Higgins,
Lough Ennel,
Co Westmeath.
