THE NEW CONFORMITY

Sir, - Thank God for Kevin Myers

Sir, - Thank God for Kevin Myers. I have today (January 24th) read and completely agreed with his article about the publication of Playboy and its monopoly caused by the banning of its competitors. This is not the first time. I recall readily Mr Myers's wonderful pieces on the rightness of French nuclear testing in light of that of the Chinese; on the monuments to official incompetence that are our motorway roundabout and traffic light junctions; on the certain failure that is the Luas, on the stupidity of our drink drive laws; and of the basis of the Franco German European axis in the tragedies of Verdun, the Somme and the Marne. There have been many others.

The modern cancer afflicting our society is that of bland political correctness. Simply to hold an opinion opposing EMU or the Luas is widely regarded as unpatriotic. Opinions approving of French nuclear testing, rejecting the drink drive laws or believing that feminism has gone too far, cannot safely be articulated in the Ireland of 1997. One must conform, you see, with the PC liberal social consensus or face the consequences.

I stand in awe at the number of times Mr Myers has so articulately expressed views that I would, if I could. Keep it up Kevin; keep slamming away at everything politically correct. The country needs you. - Yours, etc.,

Castleside Drive, Rathfarnham,
