Sir, - Are there enough numerate people around to form a little celebration party for the end of the millennium? I intend to pour something in the 60th minute of the 24th hour of December 31st, 2000 AD, and at the stroke of midnight toast the New Year, the new century and the new millennium.

It may be a fine claret in polished crystal or home made beer in a delph mug, but I should prefer not to be alone; and among those numerate people some may also be literate enough not to try to "improve" Burns by adding "the sake of when we sing Auld Lang Syne.

Perhaps, in the meantime, Patricia McKenna MEP could "injunct" the Government from spending taxpayers' money promoting the idea that the millennium ends a year earlier. - Yours, etc.,
