Sir, - Monsignor Faul has the right to defend Catholic schools, (see Rite and Reason, July 16th), but not to state that "integrated schools were started by the British and given favoured legislative status as a dirty political trick, to undermine Catholic schools."

Integrated schools in Northern Ireland have been started by groups of parents, both Catholic and Protestant, who wanted their children educated together in our divided community. These parents also "have had to struggle for their schools." The parents of the first integrated school, Lagan College, had to raise £750,000.

Our television screens have recently shown many of Northern Ireland's young people engaged in sectarian conflict. It is particularly sad that Monsignor Eaul cannot join with integrated and other non Catholic schools in the fight against the "secular liberal monster." - Yours, etc.,
