The dogs of Dookinella still chase cars

Sir, – I am happy to report that the current generation of “the dogs of Dookinella”(note spelling of the name), still provide a noisy gauntlet for cars driving through the village (Frank McNally, An Irishman’s Diary, March 29th).

Though these days less in canine numbers and ferocity (my experience goes back 40-plus years) this traditional rite of passage continues. In addition, because the winding road of about 2km through the village to the spectacular Cliffs of Minaun is a dead-end, drivers can expect the same noisy reception on the way back! – Yours, etc,

MICHAEL LENAHAN,

Dookinella,

Achill, Co Mayo.
