Sir, - I, like most people, was stunned by the news of Princess Diana's untimely and horrific death. She had an unhappy married life, was treated abominably by her adulterous husband and was practically disowned by the royal family. Refusing to give her, as the mother of the future king, the title HRH was a despicable act of petty jealousy, small-mindedness and hidebound intolerance.

Her death prompts the question: "Where lies the blame?" In my opinion the media certainly played a big part in creating the immediate circumstances leading up to the accident which killed her, but the long-term blame must lie fairly and squarely on her ex-husband, Prince Charles.

Had he been as loyal and faithful to the marriage vows which he took before God and the British nation as his wife was and always wanted to be, she would be alive today and the royal family would have been the better for it and undoubtedly held in much higher esteem.

Prince Charles, if he has any sense of decency left, should hang his head in shame forever more. I consider Camilla Parker-Bowles to be of minimal relevance and unworthy of any further comment. - Yours, etc.,
