Sir, – I am appalled by John Waters’s reference to “the Nordie refugee camp that is Mullaghmore” (Weekend Review, March 31st).

My husband and I have lived and worked in Mullaghmore for the past 46 years, and one of the many things we have valued over the years are the close links this village has with the North of Ireland. There has always been a reciprocal understanding and appreciation of each other’s good qualities (and tolerance of the bad ones) between the inhabitants of the village and the visitors from Ulster – and I mean the nine counties of Ulster.

This was apparent when Lord Mountbatten’s boat, Shadow V was blown up. Everyone was involved in helping out, doing what needed to be done, and the terrible grief and sorrow of that day were shared by all: there were no refugees – ‘Nordie’ or otherwise.

It ill behoves Mr Waters, in praising his own place, to denigrate others’. – Yours, etc,
