Madam, - As someone devoid of religious sentiment, may I express my lack of objection to the sounding of the Angelus bell on RTÉ, or anywhere else?
The sound of a bell on the evening air is one of life's small pleasures, an accompaniment to birdsong or a counterpoint to industrial cacophony.
The only reason I can think that self-proclaimed secularists might object to such a sound is that they are afraid that unless they steel themselves in rejection as the very first strike rings out, they will fall, to their knees in a Pavlovian response uttering atavistic chants to a deity whose existence they claim to deny.
In which case, the problem is not the bell. - Yours, etc,
