Sir, - In the excellent feature "Isolated Island" (Weekend, March 10th), Aine Ryan refers to the Achill Mission founded by Rev Edward Nangle. She writes: "during the Famine they were known as `The Soupers': their aid was contingent on the recipient's conversion."
This is a careless, unbalanced, sweeping generalisation which perpetuates a selective reading of a complex and controversial movement in a tragic period of Ireland's history. - Yours, etc.,
Robert Dunlop, Brannockstown Manse, Naas, Co Kildare.
