Sir, - As an American citizen born and raised in Dublin, I'm sure I speak for millions of Irish Americans in offering profoundest thanks to our Irish friends and families for the balm of sympathy you have provided these past days.
From news of the national day of mourning to our own National Public Radio's relay of RTE's compassionate broadcast, your thoughts and prayers, your poetry and music have helped us find that calm bay of introspection where we must refine normality.
With such friends and friendship, the United States will surely rediscover and refresh the principles of democracy which have inspired lovers of freedom and justice for over 200 years, and we shall surely rekindle, after these dark days, the lamp in the Statue of Liberty.
As we discover our zest and energy, and as we balance them with a new maturity and awareness, we shall always remember gratefully your generous outpouring of sympathy and encouragement. - Yours, etc.
Gully Stanford, Denver, Colorado, USA.
