A chara, - Orla Ni Bhroinn, (March 23rd) appears to believe that qualifications alone without specific training, aptitude or experience are adequate when it comes to marking examinations. I do not deny that there may be people with higher academic qualifications than some qualified teachers, ready and available to mark scripts. However, to think that such examiners could mark as accurately and fairly as an experienced teacher would be taking a very narrow view of our education system.
I think it naive of any professional to think that he/she could do the work of another professional to the same high standard in an area of work to which they are unaccustomed with little or no training. The highest of standards should be maintained in the marking of our students' examinations. - Yours, etc.,
