Sir, - I cannot agree with Mr Mowatt's suggest ion (April 14th) that the simple solution to car tax problems is to scrap all forms of car and road tax, and to put a levy on the price of fuel.

Over two million visitors to Ireland in 1996 used a car while in the country. in fact, our scenery and quiet country roads make Ireland one of the most favoured countries in Europe for motoring holidays. A levy on petrol and Diesel prices would have a very detrimental effect on the number of people visiting our shores, and a subsequent reduction in the numbers employed in this very important industry would be unavoidable. - Yours, etc.,
