Sir, - Now that it becomes apparent that the present policy is to force motorists to leave their cars at home during work days, it is surely time to change the fixed motor taxation charge to one based on car usage.
By abolishing the fixed charge and replacing it with a fuel charge, car users would pay for the time a car is used. Surely those involved in these traffic decisions don't expect car owners to pay the present exorbitant rates of motor tax fees to leave the car at home for five or six days per week.
The time has arrived for car owners to take a stand by insisting that the change is made from a fixed charge to a usage charge. - Yours, etc., Ray Fay,
Malahide Road, Dublin 3.
