Tax cuts and homelesssness

Madam, - Fr. Peter McVerry suggests, succintly (February 21st), that "the PDs postpone their tax cuts until all homeless people have been given beds".

But why stop there? Why not postpone tax cuts until all wrong has been put right? Until the physical and emotional needs of every, man woman and child in the State have been met or exceeded by the State?

In addition to being a kind and compassionate man, I expect that Fr McVerry is an intelligent man. Has it escaped his radar that, as taxes have been cut, the resources available to the Government have gone up? Or would he prefer to revert to 1985: high taxes, high unemployment, high emigration? And, indeed, homelessness. - Yours, etc,
