Sir, - You reported (February 24th) that the Taoiseach and Tanaiste were to meet representatives of the credit unions but that the relevant minister, Mr Charlie McCreevy, would not be there. Earlier, Mr McCreevy was reported as saying that he would implement legislation "in a way that they [credit unions] may not like".
As a credit union member for quite a number of years, may I suggest that the Minister take note of the Dail constituency implied by the address on my letter and note that there are more than 31,000 members of credit unions in that constituency and that, unless he has other career plans, he will have to seek re-election in the hopefully-not-too-distant future.
It is more than 30 years since I last actively participated in politics as a callow and idealistic canvasser in the local elections. The vindictiveness implied in the Minister's reported remarks is one of the few things which would induce me to re-enlist in the political process; and it would not be with the objective of increasing electoral support for him. - Yours, etc,
John McEneaney, Celbridge, Co Kildare.
