Madam, - The prestigious organisation Amárach Consulting has added to the warnings about an impending shortage of power (Business, December 22nd).

One of the solutions it proposes is to take an option on nuclear power. But instead of suggesting that we build a nuclear plant in this country, Amárach puts forward a bizarre solution, namely to commission a reactor in another country!

This is humbug and hypocrisy. Ireland is grown-up now, and should cease running to nanny.

If we need nuclear energy to supply our needs (and I believe we will soon do so) we should generate it ourselves. One of these days we shall have to face the inevitable, which is that nuclear power is the only reliable source of electricity.
