Sir, – Your editorial (July 16th) on the debt crisis enveloping Europe mirrors Ajai Chopra’s point of last week, that we need “A European solution to a European problem”. The European solution to date – delay, obfuscation and denial – has not worked.

European governments, including the Irish, must show leadership that overcomes national interests. Above all it must tell the truth – that European countries, economies and banks are too interwoven to let one fall.

The European Union has to deepen as well as widen through eurobonds, fiscal co-operation and (shock horror) convergence of tax and social standards such as pensions and welfare. – Yours, etc,
