Madam, - The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Michael Conaghan, is right in his effort to get off-licences not to sell alcohol on St Patrick's Day. It is at least an attempt to do something about the binge-drinking and drugs culture that is all too common today.
In an interview in your edition of March 4th, Liam Neeson, the well-known Irish actor, said: "Dublin has changed so much and not for the better, I think. There's a ruthlessness to the city now that wasn't there before.
"I was in Dublin a few months ago, when we were shooting Breakfast on Pluto, and if I saw one kid throwing up on the street I must have seen a hundred of them. I was just shocked at the number of kids I saw going around drunk."
It is about time that somebody shouted "stop" with regard to this problem. Again, congratulations to the Lord Mayor. - Yours, etc.,
PAT CAHILL, Immediate Past President, ASTI, Whitehall Road, Terenure, Dublin 12.
