Spirit of Ireland greeted with silence

Madam, – It is now a week since Spirit of Ireland launched its highly innovative and immensely creative wind and hydro project that will transform our economy, make us energy independent, reduce energy costs to the consumer and improve competitiveness, reduce our carbon footprint substantially, reduce our imports of fossil fuels by at least €3 billion a year, allow us to meet the national plan for electric cars in a carbon neutral way, and make us a net exporter of energy to the rest of Europe, and not least create 70,000 jobs.

Amazingly and disgracefully not one politician has commented, or, indeed welcomed this extraordinary initiative. It seems the party political imperative of getting councillors of dubious value re-elected, two byelections and European elections transcend the national interest. The parish pump is alive and well and to hell with everything else.

We can only hope that Nama is not treated in the same fashion during these next few critical weeks.

This project demands immediate priority, scrutiny and support and its approval and funding and planning fast-tracked. It is the only light at the end of the tunnel currently. – Yours, etc,
