Sir, - The many fatal road accidents in recent weeks have led to a series of comments and suggestions. Speed is often cited as the main contributing factor. Speed, as we all know, can kill, but it is by no means the sole cause of road deaths. In this connection we must examine the vital role played by seat belts in reducing the number of fatal accidents.
The use of seat belts is compulsory for drivers and car occupants, but, like so many other laws, this is not properly enforced. According to statistics, 44 per cent of Irish motorists do not wear seat belts. However, these motorists always fasten their seat belts when flying, because they are compelled to do so. On the one hand, there is public outcry about the tragic loss of life on our roads, and on the other hand we tolerate and show leniency to those who flout the law.
If we are genuinely sincere about reducing the death toll on the roads, the law will have to be rigorously enforced and heavy fines must be imposed on all those who fail to use seat belts. - Yours, etc.,
Milltown, Co Galway.
