Sir, - As the Finance Bill works its way through the Dail, it becomes clear how far Fianna Fail have moved from their roots. With the individualisation and non-transferability of tax allowances between spouses, we move yet further down the road mapped and driven by Mrs Thatcher who had the view that there is no such thing as society.
We are moving from a society and a community to an economy and individuals. We, the people and our children, are and will be the losers. For our maturity and happiness as human beings we all need each other to depend on and be depended upon. If our society continues to change to one based and valued on things rather than people we will be impoverished beyond measure. And don't forget that many of our visitors come to Ireland because they still believe people will take time to chat on the street or in shops. - Yours, etc.,
Patrick Davey, Shankill, Co Dublin.
