Sir, - I refer to the "contribution" of the vintners' leader Tadg O'Sullivan to the current proposal to ban smoking in pubs (The Irish Times, November 9th). This spokesperson attempts to justify his members' total opposition to a ban on commercial grounds by citing the example of a Galway licensee who attempted unsuccessfully to impose a ban because his customers went elsewhere. In the event of a total ban being imposed, surely would does not arise?

Dublin Corporation has operated a "no smoking" policy without fuss for some years past. It is accepted by all, including councillors and the public.

If Mr O'Sullivan led his members on this very important health issue, it would help all those of us who enjoy a drink and who are quite properly and rightly concerned about the well-documented dangers to our health posed by passive smoking. - Yours, etc.,

Cllr Tony Taaffe, Main Street, Finglas, Dublin 11.
